Alnes is situated at the north side of Godøy – one of the four islands in Giske Municipality - seeing Ålesund and the mainland in the east and the open horizon in the west. With only a few breaks, the lighthouse has been in operation since 1852. The lighthouse is still in operation (automated in 1982), and since 1993 the lighthouse has also functioned as a local and regional cultural centre in a unique landscape. The islands of Giske are connected to the mainland through sub sea tunnels and a bridge. Ålesund Airport, Vigra, and the city of Ålesund are only 20 minutes away by car. This makes Alnes lighthouse one of the easiest accessible lighthouses in Norway. During the summer the lighthouse is a popular destination for both tourists and people in the region.
