| Location: Nordkynhalvøya, Finnmark municipality | Welcome to the world’s northernmost lighthouse station! Slettnes lighthouse, one of the most famous lighthouses in Norway, is situated at the top of the European continent, with the Barents Sea seething beside it. It is found in the middle of the Slettnes nature reserve that stretches for three and half kilometres from the picturesque and flourishing fishing village Gamvik. The lighthouse rises proudly in the open cultural landscape. Its functional and neo-classical style speaks to you. Perhaps you are here during the winter. Or why not at Christmas? With skis in your luggage, ready to challenge or explore the spectacular Arctic nature. Or sitting inside, in the warm and solid lighthouse keeper’s house, whilst storms rage outside and the salt water lashes against the window panes. But it doesn’t need to be like that; it can be quite the opposite. You are here during the warmer part of the year. You are seeking silence and harmony: peace and quiet, inside and outside. And you need to top up your experiences, which you know lie right over the doorstep. Walk along a nature trail in a reserve of international calibre. Take a short walk round the bird trail to one of Scandinavia’s most important nesting places for wading birds. Be astonished at the exciting heritage trail and just let Slettnes’ rich history through thousands of years open up for you. Perhaps you are looking for more, and take the trip to the very fine museum at Gamvik. Why not hire a bicycle? You can find out more about how important the fish caught in the open waters here are for the place. Or take a trip to the fish production company itself, in order to find out even more about why one of the world’s most technologically advanced production plants for spider crabs - and which provides for practically 50% of the country’s exports- is situated right here. Don’t be surprised if this encourages you to try out the nearby restaurant. Each day there is a seafood dish. And why not round off the evening with a visit to the café/pub at the foot of Slettnes lighthouse. Read more! |
